Here are the names of the holiday episodes coming out !
Episode 34 – 3rd episode in the holiday series – Why it’s important to practice Gratitude with Fibromyalgia
Episode 35 – Simple Ideas to make traveling easier with Fibro
Episode 36 – Faith and Fibromyalgia
So let’s get started with today’s topic of “Ways to Survive the Holidays with Fibromyalgia ’’ .As you know living with fibromyalgia can be hard living a life at all. Let alone adding the holidays.
But now the holidays are upon us. With that that comes the extra shopping , cooking , entertaining and travel.
What this might mean for you is more pain , flare ups, exhaustion and fatigue . Along with other symptoms .
So you are thinking to yourself. What can I do to not exert myself but also enjoy the holidays ?
Here is an idea for you !
- Get Organized
You can do this several ways
The first thing I recommend is having a monthly checklist of what you need to get done to enjoy the holidays. I would pick your top 3 things for that day . If you get all 3 done that is great. If you get one done that is also great. I don’t want you to put pressure on yourself if you can’t get any of them done. Having a day to rest and binge watch Hallmark/Lifetime christmas movies is fine in my book. I will be doing that almost every night for the next 2 months. Give yourself permission to relax. You also can do something then take a break.
I want you to be able to enjoy the holidays but also take care of yourself. So put relaxing on your monthly checklist.
Another idea for you is if you have brain fog as most with fibromyalgia do I suggest using sticky notes. You can put them in the places that you will see to remind you what you need to do.
One last idea is that there are so many planners out to schedule out what you do !
I have a christina planner called Ibloom that gives a monthly calendar , monthly goals , gratitude list , relationships to invest in , what’s going well , what’s not going well and ect.
Whatever you do (planner, sticky notes, monthly checklist or something else ) remember is that it needs to fit with your life.
I also suggest starting right now with all the holiday prep and making your lists. As this takes a lot of the stress off you which makes a big difference.
So now let’s talk about the things that fill up our schedule.
Let’s talk about shopping .
One thing you might think about is doing your shopping early. If you leave shopping until the end it will bring on the flares, the fatigue and getting sick.
I believe the best way is to do online shopping. It gets delivered to your door that way you don’t have to go out in the crowds. Personally for me I rather shop online then go out into the crowds to shop .
But if you are the type that likes to go to the store . Then go on a weekday and if possible the mornings are the best. You might be thinking that is hard to do because you struggle with sleep. I do have a free sleep guide that can help you with that called “The Sleep Fix For Those with fibromyalgia ’’ on my website www.amandaeliselove.com .Which will also be included in the show notes. I also recommend that you have a list when you go as the fibro fog might kick in.
Decorate – in an efficient manner. Which means that you don’t have to do every place in the house. Just choose the places that your family spends the most time in. Or have them help you decorate especially if you are the one who hosts the holidays.
Have someone else cook the holiday meal. This can be a family member or your whole family. You might also want to have a store do the meal for you. Think about it this way the cost of the food and then the time it takes to prepare it. It might be worth it in the end for you to enjoy the holidays.
If you are going to drink – do it in moderation and not on an empty stomach. If you do make sure to eat something and drink a lot of water ,preferable with some electrolytes or some potassium
Be selective with who you see.
If you go to multiple houses for thanksgiving and christmas. Choose the most important! Space them out. Call those who you can’t make it too. Send them your regards . Plan something with them after the holidays. Don’t feel guilty for not going to every event as your health comes first!
Last tip: Talk to your family and Friends about your fibro .
I want you to be honest with them about your health issues. Tell them what your symptoms are and that flare ups are unbearable . They might not understand and think you are using it as an excuse. Maybe they think it is not as bad as you say. They might not change their understanding of Firomyalgia but at least you tried.
I hope these tips help you during the holidays. That you enjoy your family and friends , church gatherings you will be attending the people you will be seeing and helping , the delicious foods and beautiful decorations. Watch some heartwarming holiday movies. Think about what you have to be grateful for in your life during this holiday season and soak it in as much as possible.
