   I do believe that there is a lot of information both good and bad out there about fibromyalgia. As an educator who specializes in this area, I think it is my job to point out to you that beneficial information can be organized in a fashion that will reduce the symptoms of this malady. 

    My name is Amanda Elise Love and  I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 9 years ago which influenced my decision to enter the field of nutrition and now I am a Registered Holistic Nutritionist who works with those who are suffering from fibromyalgia. 

Before we get started  I want to say that each podcast is to be informative but also to help you take some action steps that will improve your health.  Please try some of these suggestions and let me know if they have benefitted you.

. Our thyroid hormones are monitored by the hypothalamus which sends a message to the pituitary which relays that message to the thyroid to increase the production of T-4 hormones. But what happens if the thyroid malfunctions and is unable to follow the directions from the hypothalamus and pituitary?  

   Also,  what is the reason why the thyroid is unable to receive instructions from the other glands? Follow me along now as these questions will be answered.  

  It is reported by a recent study that there are between 25 and 30 million people who suffer from thyroid dysfunction. Half of that number is undiagnosed. Of the known cases more than half are due to an autoimmune disorder called Hashimotos. In this condition, thyroid tissue is destroyed resulting in hypothyroidism. This destruction occurs because our own immune system thinks that our thyroid tissue is an invader that needs to be destroyed.

  One of the leading athorities in the field of thyroid disease is Doctor Datis Kharrazian. In his long term research, he has found that in some thyroid disorders thyroid tissue is gradually being destroyed by our own immune system which causes autoimmune diseases such as Celiac Disease and other immune disorders.  Doctor Kharrazian’s research has led him to conclude that when gluten enters the bloodstream, where it doesn’t belong, our immune system attacks it. So why does this happen? 

Doctor Kharrazian believes this happens because the gluten molecule and thyroid molecule are very similar in structure leading to misidentification by our own immune system.

Going back to the action of the hpt loop which we talked about in episode 14. Interruption of the messages sent to the thyroid is a result of the destruction of thyroid tissue caused by the immune system prompted by the presence of gluten in the bloodstream.  So if you suffer from thyroid dysfunction gluten should be avoided completely as it is the source for the development of Hashimoto’s or Hypothyroidism. It must also be eliminated in the case of Celiac Disease and other autoimmune disorders such as Fibromylgia.

  Please note hypo or hyperthyroidism are serious conditions that must be assessed by a doctor who will order a complete thyroid panel which includes : 

T 4 and T3

Reverse T3 

TSH

Thyroid antibodies 

In the case of hypo or hypothyroidism the following suggestions should be followed : 

  1. Eliminate all Gluten from your diet – Gluten can be a thyroid disruptor. It may lead to thyroid tissue destruction as well as being inflammatory which can worsen existing conditions. 

         2. Avoid thyroid disruptors in the environment. These include chlorine, plastic containers, pesticides, and non -organic sunscreen. Invest in a good BPA water bottle. This is a great step to decrease your daily exposure to toxins. 

3.Limit foods that contain heavy metals. High levels in the body can contribute to the development of autoimmune conditions. For example,  farm-raised fish is high in mercury and rice is high in arsenic. You might want to have your heavy metal levels tested by your doctor.

    Now, to return to the question of the connection between gut health and thyroid dysfunction. Remember, that around 80 percent of our immune system is located in our gut. If our gut is unhealthy unwanted particles of undigested food enter the bloodstream. When this happens the ability of our immune system to function without error is hampered. The destruction of the thyroid tissue by mistake is just one example. 

 This receding information is just the beginning of addressing thyroid health. Remember, testing should be done by a physician.
