I always include show notes for those with “ brain fog” so you don’t have to take notes.

I do believe that there is a lot of information both good and bad out there about fibromyalgia. As an educator who specializes in this area, I think it is my job to point out to you that beneficial information can be organized in a fashion that will reduce the symptoms of this malady.

My name is Amanda Elise Love and  I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 9 years ago which influenced my decision to enter the field of nutrition and now I am a Registered Holistic Nutritionist who works with those who are suffering from fibromyalgia.

Before we get started  I want to say that each podcast is to be informative but also to help you take some action steps that will improve your health.  Please try some of these suggestions and let me know if they have benefitted you.

If you have been diagnosed with Fibromylgia or chronic fatigue syndrome then it would be wise to learn about maintaining a healthy liver.

Let’s start with the basics. The liver weighs about the same as a four lb bag of sugar and is the largest gland in the body. If damaged in an accident a healthy liver can regenerate up to 75 percent of itself. The process of regeneration takes about two months. If your liver has been damaged severely by alcohol it cannot regenerate.

The liver is second in importance only to the heart as it performs dozens of critical functions in maintaining good health.

Here are a few of its responsibilities :

 1. The liver stores and regulates the blood nourishing every cell in our body. Every part of the body depends on the liver for nourishment.

2. The liver manufactures and secretes bile needed for digestion and cleansing of the blood. Bile is necessary for the breakdown of fats into small globules and then it assists in the absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E and K which helps in the assimilation of calcium. The liver extracts nutrients from the bloodstream which includes iron, vitamins A, B-12, and D.

3. Another major function of the liver is to remove toxic waste from the bloodstream. It prohibits toxic substances such as drugs, alcohol, metabolic waste, and insecticides which are secreted through the kidney and the bowels.

4.  The liver also breaks down hormones such as adrenaline, estrogen, and insulin after they have performed their functions. If the liver is not working effectively hormone levels rise and accumulate in the tissues.

5. The liver produces blood coagulation proteins such as prothrombin and fibrinogen so that the coagulation process is correctly balanced.

6. Also,  the liver produces a substance called “Glucose Tolerance factor or GTF. This substance acts with insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. When we consume  more sugar than we need for energy the liver converts it to glycogen and stores it until needed. If we consume more food than we need for energy production then the liver converts it to fat and is stored in fatty tissues.

7. Another responsibility of the liver is to regulate thyroid production by converting  T- 4 ( a thyroid hormone ) into a more active form called T-3. If this doesn’t occur it leads to hypothyroidism

The workings of the liver are nothing short of miraculous  so we are all extremely fortunate that it can regenerate itself.

While there are supplements that will help maintain a healthy liver I’m just going to focus on whole foods that will also help you to achieve that goal.

Here are some general food tips for a healthy or healthier liver:

  • What to avoid

: Limit foods that are high in fat, sugar, and salt …

  • Talk to your doctor about alcohol and your liver health
  • Eat a balanced diet: Select foods from all food groups including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, meat and beans, and olive oil.
  • Oatmeal – As we have already established,  the liver is a processing factory. So there is a lot of digestion that takes place in the liver. Oatmeal contains large amounts of fiber and fiber is very important when it comes to digestion. The specific fiber in oatmeal is very helpful to the liver. Oats are rich in a compound called beta-glucans which is beneficial to the liver as well as the immune system. Try eating gluten-free oatmeal especially if you have fibromyalgia. Pre-packaged oats usually contain sugars which are really not important to your health so avoid it.
  • Fruit, especially berries, contains an antioxidant which plays a major role in protecting the liver Berrie’s in general help strengthen your immune system and lower your blood pressure if eaten every day, especially blueberries.
  • Broccoli is an anti-inflammatory vegetable which prevents fatty liver diseases. Studies have shown that broccoli helps prevent liver cancer. Broccoli is a must eat if you want to have a healthy liver.

Garlic – Garlic is very important in detoxifying the liver when it comes to keeping your liver healthy.

Lastly, beets are powerful antioxidants that act to restore liver health.  I really like The Beet Lady’s products which you may want to research online.  The link will also be in the show notes.

This preceding information is just the beginning of addressing liver health!
